AT THE CORE?

This morning’s News-Gazette carries a page one article headlined, “UI’s financial status better, official claims.”  The article, by reporter Paul Wood, quotes Michael Andrechak, Associate Provost for budgets and resource planning as claiming a 23% reduction in deficits on the Urbana campus in his presentation to the Urbana Senate executive committee.   Among the savings he cited were those resulting from closing the Police Training Institute and the proposed abandonment of the Institute of Aviation.   The savings from the two closures he projected at between $1.4 and $1.6 Million, or about enough to pay the salaries of the new President and Chancellor and not quite enough to cover the severance packages of their predecessors.   In both cases the justification for closing the Institutes has been that they do not support the University’s “core mission”.  To put it in perspective the projected savings from closing institutes approximate what Coach Zook will take home next year.  On the revenue side of the equation Andrechak cited a projected increase in the admission of foreign and out of state students to enhance tuition revenues.
