Gerard's First Leadership Test

This is ridiculous.

Smile Politely Coverage of Calvin/Martel Miller: Local activist’s son beaten by Champaign police

News-Gazette City Council Meeting Coverage

I had no idea about the details of the Miller incident before arriving at the study session yesterday, before it was hijacked by activists.  When I asked one of the people wearing the yellow signs what this was about, the gentleman informed that Calvin Miller was the victim of an unprovoked attack and that pepper spray was used after he was already in handcuffs.  The news coverage (and I'm not talking about smile politely) tells a much different story.

From N-G: Rietz said when interviewed, Miller told the officer that his father, Martel Miller, told him he was not required to stop for police and to keep driving and call him, which he said he was trying to do. Rietz said officers described the younger Miller as "very apologetic."

Being defiant and disrespectful will certainly keep drama alive and well with City of Champaign race relations, increasing the probability of more issues in the future.

Many people in this town thought that new leadership would help improve race relations in Champaign.   Mayor Schweighart lost a very close election largely because of his poor handling of the Carrington shooting.  This is Gerard's first leadership test.  How do you think he's handling the Miller situation so far?
