Robert T. Finney, Chief of Police for the Champaign Police Department announced his retirement today effective January 20, 2012. “It is with great joy and trepidation that I announce my intent to retire,” says Finney. “I entered into law enforcement over 30 years ago as a civilian employee and since that time I have enjoyed working in every facet and position that law enforcement has to offer”, he added.
Finney has been in law enforcement since 1982 when he began his police career in Quincy, Illinois. There he rose through the ranks to Deputy Chief in 1997 and then became Chief of Police in Carbondale, Illinois, in 1999. He joined the City of Champaign on November 17, 2003.
According to Champaign City Manager Steve Carter, “Chief Finney has had an outstanding career in law enforcement, including the last 8 years as the Champaign Police Chief. He has led the department through some very challenging times, with the growth of the City, greater emphasis on police-community relations and addressing recent budget issues.”
During his tenure as Champaign Police Chief, some of his accomplishments involved the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, overseeing the Police Evidence Departmental renovations, establishing a Community Action Team (CAT), School Resource Office Program and use of videos in all vehicles. Most recently, Finney was appointed as the President of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. Under his supervision, the department also received numerous awards and commendations.
Carter acknowledged Finney’s accomplishments and stated, “He has been very responsive to the public and City council and has provided leadership for a number of significant accomplishments. We thank him for his commitment to community service and wish him the best in his retirement.”
The City of Champaign will begin a search for the next Chief of Police immediately. Carter indicated a nationwide search will be conducted with the help of a search committee made up of citizens, employees and other local police officials. The process will include a variety of components to insure that the most qualified candidate is selected to serve in such an important position. The process is expected to extend over the next several months.
