“I am not a magician.” I had to be blunt with an organization not long ago when their director came to me and asked if I could help raise $100,000 before the end of last year. It was October.
As much as I would love to assist organizations no matter their fundraising situation, there are groups who have created conditions that are nearly impossible to recover from, short of a miracle.
But for two recent groups I worked with, there were no magic, rabbits, or hat involved: just commitment, investment, and follow-through. And the transformations have been amazing.

My first real pang of activism – of charity – began when I was 10 when I found a Time magazine on the kitchen table with stories and photos of the famine in Ethiopia. This one moment, after 4th grade that one day, changed the course of my life, driving me to the pulpit of my church to give me my first conscious experience with agape – the unlimited love that comes with the act of giving back.
As we grapple with lingering impacts of the earthquake on Haiti last year and now the devastation unleashed on Japan, as we continue to struggle in a state racked with budget woes and cities making enormous cuts to make ends meet, remembering how simple acts of charity can profoundly impact others in need can unleash the power of agape – of charity – in you, too.

The distinction between non-profit organizations and for-profit companies lies in what is done with profits, not whether profits should exist. Non-profits can – and should – earn profits and board members should consider themselves different sorts of shareholders: ones striving to create returns not for themselves, but for their organizations – and more importantly, for the programs they run and the clients they serve.
